Development of a rough draft design for our current bespoke commission: Neptune, “God of the Sea”.
We are currently hard at work producing this large scale bespoke window for a private client. All aspects of glass production are now underway in the studio including glass cutting, painting, kiln firing, masking and acid etching.
Before we could began actual glass production, we spent a great deal of time producing and developing a design proposal which would allow both ourselves and our client to visualize the finished commission. These images show our initial rough draft proposal, quickly produced as a simple pencil sketch, from which we then developed a full colour, large format, scaled presentation design. This is produced completely by hand, in-house, using pencil, ink and colour pencils. Our images show how this is developed, starting with a basic ink drawing, colour is applied and built up in layers to provide both depth and tonal variation.
The next step of the commission, having had the design signed off by the client, is to draw up a full size working pattern or “cartoon”. From this we can proceed to cut and paint our glass. Our next blog post will feature images of our cartoon in development.
