After 5 weeks of early morning trecks down the M6 and hours and hours spent crawling on hands and knees in spaces that would prove difficult for even the most vertically challenged, Lightworks have completed the restoration of this fine old Edwardian stained glass dome. It is located within the offices of the former Joseph Crosfield & Sons Ltd building in Warrington. For more on the detail and history behind the dome take a look at our earlier blog post via this link: https://www.lightworksstainedglass.co.uk/edwardian-stained-glass-dome-to-be-cleaned-and-repaired/
Our scope of works included carrying out multiple insitu repairs to both unpainted and painted glass, the re-introduction of supporting saddle bars to both the upper and under sides of the glass and redecoration of the 112 existing bars remaining in place to the underside. However, with over 110 years worth of dust, debris and grime having built up, it was cleaning of the glass which took up the lion’s share of our time with both surfaces (approx 8000 individual pieces) being cleaned twice.
On completion, Senior Projects Manager – John Graham had this to say:
“Thanks for all you great work. The dome is looking amazing. We should have done this years ago!”
Our images show works underway and completed, pre and post cleaning and details of three of the four figures representing various aspects of the science and industry associated with soap manufacturing.
