At the beginning of 2017, this late period Shrigley and Hunt stained glass window at Coppull Parish Church was in very real danger of collapsing. Not due to the structural condition of the glass (at only around 60 years old this was is relatively good condition) but the badly rotting frame within which it was situated. The central dividing mullion in particular was in a very perilous condition and was unlikely to have seen out another winter.
The repair and restoration works undertaken to return the window to sound structural condition was a collaborative effort between ourselves and M & P Gildert of Penwortham.
The first stage in tackling the project was to meet with Martin Baldwin of Gildert’s to assess the condition of the frame and propose the most suitable course of action. Once agreed upon, the following works were undertaken;
Lightworks carefully removed both main lights (including the heavy plate glass secondary glazing) allowing Gildert’s to manufacture and install new replacement timber jambs, sills and central mullion, matching exactly the profile of the originals. We then re-installed the studio cleaned stained glass with new non ferrous supporting saddle bars. Following redecoration internally and externally by Coppull decorator John Chadwick, the entire window (both glass and frame) was protected externally with 8mm UV protected polycarbonate sheet.
We have worked previously on a number of contracts with M&P Gildert and their professionalism and craftsmanship ensure they remain our joinery specialists of choice whenever such a service is required.
